Post-WSIS+20 Review: Assessing the Adopted Outcome Document

The WSIS+20 Outcome Document has been adopted.

But adoption is only the beginning.

The real question now is: what does it actually deliver for Africa and the Global South?

In our new review, the AI for Africa Thinktank (AIFAT) looks closely at the final UN document and measures it against five priorities we believe are essential for a fair digital future:

  • Affordable connectivity
  • Digital sovereignty and data governance
  • Human rights and digital freedoms
  • Sustainable finance and investment
  • Digital public infrastructure

There is progress in the language and recognition of these issues. But in many areas, the commitments remain broad promises rather than clear actions.

This review serves as both a scorecard and a roadmap — showing where the document moves in the right direction and where more work is still needed.

If you care about the future of digital governance, Africa’s role in it, and what happens next after WSIS+20, this paper is for you.
